Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has joined Cabinet ministers and senior government officials in military training, saying the experience can promote discipline, accountability and stronger leadership in government.

Abiy said military institutions could help public officials develop patriotism, teamwork and coordination, qualities he believes are important to achieving Ethiopia’s national development goals.

The initiative comes as Ethiopia faces continuing conflicts in Tigray, Amhara and Oromia, alongside heightened tensions with neighbouring Eritrea.

Military training to strengthen leadership

According to reports by Addis Standard and Horn Diplomat, senior officials in Abiy’s Medemer Government are undergoing military training at the Hurso Military Training Center.

Abiy said military science and experience could help cultivate the discipline, accountability, coordination and patriotism expected of government leaders.

He argued that lessons from military institutions could improve how officials work together and carry out their responsibilities.

The training marks an unusual approach to leadership development, bringing civilian government officials into a military training environment.

Ethiopia faces mounting security challenges

The initiative comes amid persistent insecurity in several parts of Ethiopia.

The country continues to face conflict in Tigray, Amhara and Oromia, while relations with neighbouring Eritrea have become increasingly tense.

These challenges have placed security and military preparedness among the priorities of Abiy’s administration.

The prime minister has previously linked national preparedness with Ethiopia’s broader development ambitions, emphasising the role of state institutions in pursuing those goals.

Abiy’s Medemer government

The military training is taking place under Abiy’s Medemer Government, the name associated with his administration.

Abiy has presented the approach as a way to strengthen cooperation and accountability among senior officials.

However, the reports provided no detailed information on the training’s duration, specific activities or whether participation would be extended to other levels of government.
