Nigeria to Train 2,000 Youths in Free EV Programme

KEY POINTS

  • Free EV training empowers 2,000 Nigerian youths.
  • Skills will prepare mechanics and engineers nationwide.
  • Nigeria aims to lead Africa’s green transport future.

Nigeria is betting on its youth to lead the shift toward green transport. A fresh partnership between the Youth in Parliament Forum (YIPF) and CAWIN Mobility will train 2,000 young Nigerians in electric vehicle (EV) maintenance and manufacturing.

Unveiled in Abuja, the free programme is designed to give engineering students and mechanics the skills to keep pace with the country’s gradual embrace of renewable energy and electric mobility. YIPF Director General Tony Nwulu called it a “historic milestone” that will position young Nigerians at the forefront of Africa’s green revolution.

Building EV skills across Nigeria

The initiative kicks off this month, targeting 1,000 engineering students and 1,000 mechanics nationwide. Nwulu stressed the urgency of building a skilled workforce, noting that “if you drive past 20 vehicles, at least one will be electric. The critical question is: who will fix it when it develops faults?”

Free EV training empowers Nigerian youths

The programme is open to all Nigerian youths through an online registration process. Training will be free, with no fees attached, and will prepare participants for opportunities in workshops, garages, and research labs.

Lawmakers have also backed the plan. Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao Akala, chair of the House Committee on Youth in Parliament, said the initiative ensures Nigeria is “not caught unprepared” as global markets move deeper into electric mobility.

Nigeria eyes leadership in green transport

CAWIN Mobility Managing Director Wayne Ji said Nigeria’s youthful population makes it well-placed to become a regional leader. Beyond training, the company will build out an EV ecosystem, including charging stations, assembly lines, and supply chains.

“This is more than symbolic,” Ji said. “We are laying the foundation for cleaner cities, safer transport, and new jobs for the next generation.”
