The Nigeria Immigration Service has begun nationwide enforcement against foreigners overstaying visas or violating entry conditions after the government’s visa amnesty expired at the end of September.

The amnesty, introduced on July 5, gave foreign nationals until September 30 to regularize expired documents without penalties. The window closed at midnight, and officials said enforcement started immediately on October 1.

NIS targets expired visas and permits

The crackdown covers those holding expired Visas on Arrival, short visit and business visas, and outdated Comprehensive Expatriate Residence Permits and Automated Cards (CERPAC).

Overstayers face fines and entry bans in the Nigeria visa amnesty crackdown

Sanctions include expulsion from Nigeria, fines of $15 per day for overstays, or restrictions on re-entry. The penalties range from a two-year ban for overstays under three months to up to a permanent ban for those exceeding a year.

Immigration service cites security concerns

Officials said the enforcement drive is intended to ensure lawful migration, safeguard national security, and improve transparency in Nigeria’s immigration system.
