President Bola Tinubu has called on African militaries to unite in tackling the continent’s security challenges. Speaking during the second edition of the African Military Games at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized the significance of unity and collaboration.

Describing the Games as a historic platform, Tinubu highlighted its revival after over two decades as a milestone in fostering camaraderie and cooperation. The Games, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” underscore the collective strength of African nations. “Our safety and well-being demand that we stand together as one united Africa,” Tinubu remarked.

Tinubu emphasizes unity in addressing Africa’s security challenges

In his address, Tinubu urged Africa’s armed forces to deepen their partnerships, warning that no nation could address security challenges alone. “As long as any nation remains under threat, none of us can declare our continent secure,” he said.

Reflecting on the role of the Games, he commended military leaders such as General Christopher Musa and Major General Maikano Abdullahi for their commitment to reviving the event. Tinubu also recognized the power of sports in fostering discipline and resilience, traits crucial for military personnel to meet Africa’s diverse challenges.

Sports as a tool for discipline, fitness, and cooperation

The Punch reported that, the Games feature over 1,600 athletes and officials from across Africa, showcasing physical prowess and the bonds uniting armed forces. The President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Maj. Gen. Maikano Abdullahi, described the event as a testament to unity and solidarity among African militaries.

Abdullahi praised Nigeria’s leadership in hosting the Games, which he said spotlight the rich heritage and talents within Africa’s armed forces. Participants were encouraged to compete fairly, fostering sportsmanship and strengthening relationships among nations.

The opening ceremony included cultural displays, a callisthenics show, flag hoisting, and the symbolic lighting of the Games’ torch. Dignitaries such as Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru, and senior military officers graced the event.

Tinubu concluded by stressing the importance of collective action to build a safer and stronger Africa, reinforcing the Games as a vital platform for achieving this vision.
