In a significant move to combat the recurring violence in the Niger Delta, the European Union (EU) has announced a comprehensive initiative targeting 24 communities across 12 local government areas in Delta State, as well as 26 communities in 13 local government areas within Rivers and Bayelsa states. The initiative, spearheaded by Search for Common Grounds, with Fatima Abubakar as the Country Director, aims to foster inclusive community security and mitigate the factors driving violence in the oil-rich region.
During the project’s launch in Asaba, Delta State, Abubakar underscored the EU’s commitment to addressing the systemic causes of violence and criminality through ‘A Community-Centered Approach to Transforming Criminality and Violence in the Niger Delta’. This initiative seeks to build resilience among communities and promote a peaceful coexistence by understanding and tackling the root causes of conflict in the area.
Abubakar emphasized the importance of understanding the local context and conflict dynamics that have shaped the political, economic, and social landscape of the Niger Delta. She highlighted the success of previous initiatives, such as the ‘Tomorrow is a New Day’ project, funded by the EU between 2013 and 2015. This particular project played a crucial role in reducing violence in the region by facilitating the peaceful reintegration of ex-militants and promoting community reconciliation, especially in Warri South and Warri North Local Government Areas.
The project not only aims at peacebuilding but also includes infrastructural interventions like the construction of internal roads and community radio stations in Koko and Oporoza communities. These interventions are designed to enhance communication and foster a sense of community among the residents.
Abubakar called on all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to build a resilient and peaceful Delta State, setting a precedent for sustainable development and community-driven transformation.
In response, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed his gratitude towards the EU for providing the resources necessary for the project’s realization. He urged those managing the project to approach their duties with the highest degree of dedication, zeal, and integrity, ensuring the initiative achieves its intended impact.
This EU-funded project represents a hopeful stride towards lasting peace and stability in the Niger Delta, highlighting the power of collaborative efforts in addressing complex challenges.
