Former President John Dramani Mahama, also the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), calls for the implementation of smart solutions within a 24-hour economy to enhance sustainable food security in Ghana. In a social media post commemorating National Farmers’ Day on December 1, 2023, Mahama emphasized the NDC’s commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector and restoring the joy of farming.

Ghana observes National Farmers’ Day every first Friday of December, acknowledging the crucial contribution of farmers and fishermen to the nation’s food security. This year’s theme, “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience,” underlines the significance of innovation and resilience in agriculture.

Mahama outlined the NDC’s strategy to achieve food self-sufficiency, focusing on large-scale commercial agricultural production. He highlighted the importance of a robust cooperative system, supported by nationwide Farmers Service Centres, to facilitate access to agricultural credit and inputs.

According to a report by the Daily Graphic, the former President also proposed the establishment of agro-processing units in all regions, aiming to add value to a variety of agricultural products including palm, cashew, groundnuts, cotton, coffee, cocoa, soya, cassava, shea nuts, cereals, ginger, spices, cut flowers, fruits, and horticultural products. These processing plants are envisioned to create more opportunities for farmers and bolster the agricultural sector.

On National Farmers’ Day, Mahama assured Ghanaian farmers of the NDC’s dedication to prioritizing their welfare in the next government, recognizing their role as the backbone of the economy. He extended heartfelt congratulations to all farmers, thanking them for their vital contribution to feeding the nation.

As Ghana celebrates its agricultural pioneers, the focus is on embracing innovative strategies to ensure a resilient and prosperous farming community.
