  • A mob of about 50 people beat a foreign national to death in Durban, according to South African police.

  • The killing comes amid months of anti-migrant protests and reported xenophobic violence across the country.

  • Several African countries have reported deaths of their citizens in attacks, while tens of thousands of migrants have reportedly left South Africa

A foreign national has been beaten to death by a mob in Durban, South Africa, amid growing anti-immigrant tensions and demonstrations targeting migrants.

According to police, the victim was standing beside a road in Durban’s central business district when a group of about 50 people approached and allegedly assaulted him.

The man was declared dead at the scene, police said in a statement.

Authorities did not disclose the victim’s nationality or provide details about the protest linked to the incident. They said he was believed to be in his 30s or early 40s and that efforts were underway to identify those responsible.

The killing adds to concerns about the safety of foreign nationals as anti-migrant demonstrations continue in parts of South Africa.

Durban Faces Renewed Anti-Migrant Tensions

Durban has emerged as a focal point of protests against foreign nationals in recent months. Demonstrations have been accompanied by incidents of looting and violence, including unrest following an anti-migrant march in the city about two weeks before the reported killing.

Protests demanding government action against African migrants who entered or remain in South Africa without legal documentation began in June.

Although some demonstrations have focused on immigration enforcement, others have escalated into violence against foreign nationals and their property.

The situation has raised concerns among migrant communities, particularly citizens of other African countries who live and work in South Africa.

Nigeria, Mozambique, Malawi and other countries have reported that some of their citizens were killed in xenophobic attacks. South African authorities have disputed some of the claims, saying certain deaths were connected to criminal activity.

Thousands of Migrants Leave South Africa

Tens of thousands of migrants have reportedly left South Africa in recent months to escape violence, in what has been described as one of the largest mass departures in years.

The South African government has also said that many people were deported for failing to possess the required immigration documents.

South Africa remains a major destination for migrants seeking employment and economic opportunities because of its position as Africa’s largest economy.

However, some local communities argue that there are insufficient jobs and that public services are under pressure. These concerns have contributed to hostility towards foreign nationals, particularly those accused of living or working in the country without proper documentation.

The killing in Durban underscores the risks of anti-migrant sentiment escalating into violence against individuals, regardless of their specific immigration status.

Ramaphosa Condemns Violence Amid Border Control Concerns

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned anti-migrant violence while acknowledging weaknesses in the country’s border control systems.

He has recognised that gaps in border management have allowed undocumented migrants to enter and remain in South Africa.

Government figures cited in the report estimate that about 2.4 million foreign nationals live in the country, whose population is approximately 62 million.

The challenge facing authorities is to enforce immigration laws while protecting people from mob violence and ensuring that allegations against migrants are handled through lawful processes.

The latest killing is likely to intensify concerns about the protection of foreign nationals and the need to prevent protests over immigration from turning violent. Police investigations are continuing, and the victim’s identity and nationality had not been confirmed in the report.
