KEY POINTS

  • CIMKO plans $300 million expansion to double cement output by 2027.
  • Investment incorporates eco-friendly technologies and community development programs.
  • Groupe Rawji strengthens industrial footprint and employment in the DRC.

Cimenterie Kongo (CIMKO), a cement venture partly owned by the Congolese Rawji family, plans to invest over $300 million to double its production capacity in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The initiative is expected to boost yearly output from 1.4 million tons to 3 million tons by 2027. This would support the country’s growing construction industry.

Joint venture supports local development

CIMKO is a joint venture between Groupe Rawji and Pakistan’s Lucky Cement. Its Songololo plant in Kongo-Central province has been operating since 2018.

The company said the expansion will incorporate modern, environmentally friendly technologies to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. It also plans social and economic programs to benefit surrounding communities.

“The expansion is expected to create both direct and indirect jobs while enhancing cement availability and price stability,” CIMKO said.

Production growth strengthens infrastructure prospects

The $300 million investment will bolster the DRC’s cement market, potentially accelerating infrastructure projects and fostering employment. Industry observers note that government support and strengthened border controls may be necessary to capture the full impact of the expansion.

CIMKO’s move highlights the rising demand for cement in Central Africa. This is because more people are moving to cities, the government is building roads and bridges, and private companies are building homes.

The Rawji family has a lot of businesses in banking, manufacturing, distribution, real estate, and consumer products through their company, Groupe Rawji. KG, which does business in Africa, and Vizione Properties LLC, a UAE-based company that builds homes and businesses.

Billionaires Africa reports that Groupe Rawji is a major player in industrial expansion and job creation through CIMKO and other subsidiaries. They also support community projects.
