KEY POINTS
- AXIAN fintech rebrand unifies digital services.
- New board brings global fintech expertise.
- Expansion strengthens Africa’s digital finance push.
The AXIAN Group from Madagascar has given its fintech subsidiary a new name. The division will now operate as Digibank & Fintech, replacing its earlier name to reflect broader digital ambitions.
The move marks a major step in the group’s plan to scale technology-led financial services across Africa.
Board strengthened as AXIAN fintech rebrand takes shape
Digibank & Fintech operates in Madagascar, Comoros, Senegal, Tanzania and Togo. It oversees AXIAN’s flagship mobile money brands, MVola and Mixx, and aims to evolve mobile wallets into full digital banking. The goal is a unified system that serves consumers, entrepreneurs and large corporate clients.
The AXIAN fintech rebrand brings all operations under one digital identity. Mixx by Yas now unites previously fragmented brands linked to partners including Tigo in Tanzania, Free in Senegal and Togocom in Togo. The launch comes alongside the appointment of a new governance board designed to guide strategy and growth.
The board blends deep global expertise. Karim Tadjeddine of TMoney SA brings years of experience in finance and mobile money. Henri Rabarijohn, representing MVola, is a former Central Bank governor with long service in development finance.
They join William Nkontchou, co-founder of the Africa Financial Institutions Investment Platform; Brad Jones, a pioneer in mobile money across Asia; and Georg Hauer, who adds digital banking expertise from N26 and Hawk.
AXIAN CEO Hassanein Hiridjee said the new name captures a commitment to empower Africans through technology. CEO Erwan Gelebart said the strengthened board will help shape Africa’s next-generation financial services.
Enterprise strategy expands as AXIAN fintech rebrand accelerates growth
AXIAN Group continues to expand its regional reach. The company, active in six African markets, is Madagascar’s largest power producer and a leader in sustainable enterprise operations. Under Hiridjee, the group recently completed a $63 million acquisition of Wananchi Group to deepen its enterprise connectivity presence in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Wananchi provides fiber, long-haul and network services for corporate and government clients. The acquisition enables AXIAN to pair cloud, data and IoT services with its telecom infrastructure.
The combination helps AXIAN’s plan to make its high-margin enterprise solutions stronger. As data demand grows and businesses in East Africa become digital, AXIAN is in a good position to build better ties with clients and speed up the region’s digital transition.
