Lagos State says it is ready to host an upcoming international boat race, assuring participants and residents of maximum safety across its waterways.

The government said investments in safety infrastructure, technology, and security collaboration have positioned Lagos as Nigeria’s safest hub for water transportation.

Lagos showcases waterways safety commitment

Emmanuel Oluwadamilola, general manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, said the state has consistently expanded its facilities to protect passengers and vessels. He noted that Lagos had deployed patrol boats and strengthened partnerships with the Marine Police and Nigerian Navy.

International race to spotlight Lagos waterways

The forthcoming international boat race is expected to attract top competitors, sports tourists, and enthusiasts from across Africa, Europe, and beyond. Officials say the event will not only boost Lagos’ image as a global city but also promote its waterways as a viable transport and leisure corridor.

Tourism operators anticipate increased hotel bookings, hospitality spending, and visibility for the city, while the government sees it as an opportunity to demonstrate capacity to host large-scale international events on water.

Surveillance and technology enhance monitoring

According to Oluwadamilola, Lagos now operates a control room using advanced monitoring systems to track activity across its waterways. The initiative, he said, ensures effective surveillance and provides confidence to visitors and competitors.

Infrastructure upgrades ahead of global event

The government also cleaned shorelines, deployed security boats, and created designated docking zones for vessels competing in the race.

“We are delighted this race can now happen in Lagos,” Oluwadamilola said. “It proves the state’s readiness and capacity to host an international event.”
