  • Ebola outbreak in Congo can be contained with urgent action.

  • WHO mobilizes vaccines and treatment for frontline workers.

  • Immediate support is crucial to prevent regional Ebola spread.

The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo can be contained, but only if swift measures are implemented within the next two weeks, a World Health Organization official said Friday. The health ministry in Kinshasa last week declared the country’s first Ebola outbreak in three years, marking the 16th outbreak overall and the first in Kasai province since 2008.

WHO says containment remains possible

According to the latest data from the ministry, there are 32 suspected cases, 20 confirmed cases, and 16 deaths. Patrick Otim, WHO Programme Area Manager, told a Geneva briefing that containing the outbreak is “possible, but it will be challenging if we miss the window of opportunity.” He emphasized the need for more support for the government and partner organizations.

“We have the expertise, DRC has the expertise, but we need personnel, supplies, and funding to execute operations effectively,” Otim said. The WHO has stockpiled treatments and 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, which are being transported to Kasai to protect frontline health workers and those exposed to infected patients.

Vaccination campaign to begin Saturday

According to Reuters, Otim confirmed that 400 vaccine doses had reached Bulape, the outbreak epicentre, and that the vaccination campaign could start Saturday. The WHO plans to request an additional 40,000–50,000 doses for Congo. Aid workers warn the country may struggle to mount a full-scale response due to recent cuts in foreign assistance and reductions in U.S. Agency for International Development support.

Capacity in Kasai remains limited, and new treatment facilities are necessary as the outbreak risks spreading. One new case has already been reported 70 kilometres from the epicentre. Otim said the outbreak carries a moderate risk of reaching neighbouring countries, with Angola being the most likely.

WHO officials stress that urgent international support and rapid mobilization of resources are crucial. If the right steps are taken immediately, the outbreak can be contained, saving lives and preventing further regional spread.
