KEY POINTS
- Kogi launches drainage systems to cut flooding risks.
- ACReSAL project supports land recovery and resilience.
- Ododo vows proactive, sustainable environmental solutions.
Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo has pledged to strengthen flood and erosion control measures through targeted infrastructure projects aimed at protecting vulnerable communities.
In a statement issued Saturday by Information Commissioner Kingsley Femi Fanwo, Ododo said his administration is prioritizing long-term solutions that guarantee safety, sustainability and improved living standards for residents.
New drainage projects already showing impact of Kogi flood control
Ododo further pointed to newly constructed drainage systems in Etahi, Omigbo and Olubojo in Ankpa, which he said are already reducing flooding risks. Rainwater is being collected and channeled away within minutes of heavy downpours, leaving communities safer and accessible, he noted.
Leveraging climate resilience initiatives
The governor also said the state is tapping into the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project to reclaim degraded land and strengthen defenses against flooding. Led in Kogi by Ladi Jatto, the project has become a “game-changing platform” for deploying sustainable ecological solutions, Ododo added.
Moving from reaction to prevention
Finally Ododo stressed that his administration is shifting from reactive disaster management to proactive planning. “Kogi is no longer just reacting to ecological disasters; we are also proactively deploying infrastructure that prevents them,” he said.
