KEY POINTS

  • Tinubu launches tax calculator ahead of January 2026 reforms.
  • Tool lets Nigerians compare new and current income tax rates.
  • President promises system won’t punish the poor, ensures equity.

President Bola Tinubu has unveiled a Personal Income Tax calculator to help Nigerians understand how much they will pay under sweeping reforms set to take effect from January 2026.

In a post on X Friday, the president said the digital tool allows individuals to compare their estimated tax liability under the new framework with current rates. The aim, he stressed, is to simplify compliance while ensuring fairness.

“Never punish poverty”

Tinubu emphasized that the reforms are designed to protect low-income earners, ensure progressivity, and redistribute wealth more equitably across the economy.

“A fair tax system must never punish poverty or weigh down the most vulnerable,” Tinubu also said. “With the new tax laws I recently signed, taking effect from January 2026, we have lifted this burden and created a path of equity, fairness, and true redistribution in our economy.”

The president added that the calculator “shows clearly how these reforms protect low-income earners, ensure progressivity, and simplify compliance in order to deliver a transparent system that works for all.”

Income Tax calculator, public access to tool

The calculator is available online via the government’s fiscal reforms portal at fiscalreforms.ng. Tinubu further urged citizens to test the tool, saying it reflects his administration’s commitment to renewing public trust in governance.

Finally “Together, we are renewing hope in the Nigeria of our dreams,” he wrote. “Take a bet on our country. Bet on Nigeria to work for you, your family, and your community.”
