Jigawa Appeals for Support to Vulnerable Women, Children

The Jigawa State Government has appealed to philanthropists, civil society groups, and businesses to extend support to vulnerable women and children across the state.

Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hadiza AbdulWahab, made the call on Friday during a visit to the Dutse Correctional Centre, where she commiserated with two female inmates who had given birth while serving their sentences. She was represented by the Director of Social Welfare Development, Khalid Hirin.

Visit to new mothers in custody

“We are here to commiserate with the two inmates who delivered while serving their jail terms,” the Commissioner said.

As part of the visit, the ministry donated baby kits, infant milk, sanitary items, and other delivery essentials to the mothers. AbdulWahab said the gesture was intended to boost the morale of inmates and reassure them that they had not been forgotten.

Call for collective action

The Commissioner urged individuals and organisations to step in and complement government efforts.

“We urge individuals and organisations to render philanthropic services to vulnerable women and children in the state,” she said.

She added that such interventions could foster a sense of belonging among vulnerable groups, including those in correctional facilities, while encouraging rehabilitation and reintegration.

Inmates, officials react

Inmates welcomed the donation and the visit. One of the mothers, identified as Mrs. Adamu, said: “We are grateful for the Commissioner’s visit and donation.”

Furthermore the officer in charge of the centre, CSC Muhammad Haruna, praised the government’s intervention and stressed the importance of wider community involvement. “The Commissioner’s visit is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to the welfare of vulnerable women and children. This is also a call to action that requires collective effort,” Haruna said.

Strengthening social support systems

AbdulWahab reiterated the government’s commitment to outreach programmes targeting women and children in need. “We will further continue to reach out to those in need and provide support where necessary,” she said, urging the inmates to view their experience as a chance for reform.

She encouraged them to “be of good behaviour and turn a new leaf when released.”
