Morocco’s King Mohammed VI Undergoes Successful Shoulder Surgery

On December 8, 2024, King Mohammed VI of Morocco suffered a left shoulder fracture during a routine sports activity. Medical examinations confirmed a humerus fracture, necessitating surgical intervention. The operation was successfully performed the same day at the Royal Palace Clinic in Rabat. The medical team, including His Majesty’s personal physician, Professor Lahcen Belyamani, reported that the surgery went smoothly. The King’s shoulder will be immobilized for 45 days, followed by a period of functional rehabilitation.

Following the surgery, leaders from various nations extended their well-wishes. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates sent a congratulatory message to King Mohammed VI on the successful procedure.  Similarly, Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, conveyed his congratulations and wishes for the King’s continued health. 

This incident adds to the series of health challenges King Mohammed VI has faced in recent years. In 2018, he underwent heart surgery in Paris due to a heart rhythm disorder.  A similar procedure was performed in Rabat in 2020, according to Voice of America news.  Despite these health issues, the King has continued to fulfill his duties, including presiding over significant national events and international engagements.

The Moroccan public has shown deep concern and support for the King’s health, with social media platforms flooded with messages wishing him a swift recovery. The monarchy holds a central place in Moroccan society, and the King’s well-being is closely followed by citizens.

As King Mohammed VI embarks on his recovery journey, the nation remains hopeful for his prompt return to full health. The planned rehabilitation period aims to ensure that he can resume his official duties without complications.
