Ukraine has voiced deep regret over Niger’s recent decision to sever diplomatic relations, labeling the move as baseless and devoid of any substantiated reasoning. The abrupt cut in ties has sparked concerns, especially given the escalating tensions in the region. Niger’s actions were reportedly in solidarity with Mali, which had earlier severed its own ties with Kyiv, alleging Ukrainian support for rebel factions in northern Mali. However, Ukraine firmly denies these accusations and is calling for a more thorough investigation into the matter.
The controversy began when Niger’s military-led government announced on Tuesday that it was cutting diplomatic ties with Ukraine. This announcement followed a similar move by Mali, which took issue with statements made by a Ukrainian intelligence official. The official’s remarks, according to Mali, suggested that Ukraine was providing support to rebels involved in ongoing conflicts within Mali. In response, Niger’s government chose to align itself with Mali, a decision that has now drawn sharp criticism from Kyiv.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Ukraine’s foreign ministry expressed its disappointment with Niger’s decision, emphasizing that the move appeared to be based on unverified and unfounded claims. “It is regrettable that the authorities of Niger have decided to terminate diplomatic relations with Ukraine without conducting any investigation into the incident in Mali or providing any evidence as to the reasons for such a step,” the statement read.
The Ukrainian government stated that it had no involvement in the alleged support for insurgent activities in Mali. Ukrainian officials have categorically denied any claims suggesting that the nation was aiding rebels in their fight against Mali’s military authorities. In particular, the Ukrainian foreign ministry highlighted that Kyiv remains committed to international peace and stability, rejecting any form of terrorism or violence.
The diplomatic fallout is tied to comments made by Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency. Yusov’s remarks, broadcasted on national television, hinted that Malian rebels had received critical information that aided them in a recent attack. This attack, according to reports, resulted in significant casualties among Russian Wagner Group mercenaries operating in Mali.
The Wagner Group, a private military company with a notorious reputation, has been active in various conflict zones, including Ukraine and several African nations. Initially, the group played a key role in Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. However, the situation changed dramatically last year when Wagner forces mutinied against Russian authorities. The rebellion, led by the group’s founder, eventually culminated in the leader’s death in a plane crash, leading to widespread speculation about the circumstances surrounding his demise.
The Wagner Group has continued to play a prominent role in Africa, despite internal turmoil. Wagner agents have been fighting insurgency groups in Mali by conducting military operations on behalf of the government. There has, however, been some debate around this involvement. The group’s activities have been tarnished by allegations of violations of human rights and oppressive methods, which have prompted worldwide censure.
The recent attack on Wagner mercenaries by Tuareg rebels marks one of the most significant setbacks for the group in Mali. According to rebel sources, at least 84 Wagner fighters were killed in the clashes that took place in July. This defeat has raised questions about the effectiveness and sustainability of Wagner’s operations in the region.
The accusations made against Ukraine in the context of this long-running dispute have further heightened tensions. The decision by Mali to cut off relations with Ukraine, and Niger’s subsequent action along similar lines, are indicative of the geopolitical situation of the region, which is marked by growing splits and complicated ties.
Ukraine has been actively seeking international support, especially from countries in the Global South, as it fights back against Russian aggression. Now in its third year of resistance, the Ukrainian government has been trying to forge alliances and get support for its actions. However, Kyiv’s larger plan to ensure international support is threatened by the diplomatic breach with Mali and Niger.
In its statement, the Ukrainian foreign ministry made it clear that the allegations against Kyiv by Niger and Mali were unfounded. “The accusations against Ukraine cited in the statement by a representative of the government of Niger do not stand up to any criticism, are groundless and do not correspond to reality,” the ministry asserted. Ukrainian officials are urging for a more transparent and evidence-based approach to addressing the concerns raised by Niger and Mali.
