Nigerian Artist Fola David Seeks Guinness Record for Largest Individual Drawing

Fola David Aims for World Record With Monumental Drawing

by Ikeoluwa Ogungbangbe

Nigerian artist Fola David is aiming to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest drawing by an individual. David, who is also a medical doctor, spent six days working on his colossal piece at a stadium in Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling commercial capital. His artwork, titled “Unity in Diversity,” covers an impressive 1,050 square meters and depicts two giant hands holding the map of Nigeria.

David’s goal with this monumental drawing is not just to set a record but also to highlight Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. The artist hopes his work will serve as a powerful symbol of unity in a country known for its ethnic and religious diversity. Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, is home to about 250 ethnic groups. The population is split roughly equally between Muslims and Christians, often leading to ethnic tensions.

“Our diversity should be seen as something that unites us, as something that strengthens us, rather than something that should create a divide between us,” David said after completing his work on Sunday night. He believes that his artwork can help foster a sense of national unity and pride among Nigerians.

The Guinness World Record body has been notified of David’s achievement. They will need to verify the dimensions and authenticity of his work to confirm if he has indeed surpassed the previous record. The current record is held by Indian artist Ravi Soni, who created a 629.98 square meter drawing in 2021. If certified, David’s “Unity in Diversity” will significantly exceed this mark.

David’s journey to this point has been one of dedication and hard work. Balancing his medical career with his passion for art, he has often used his skills to create portraits and other artworks that resonate with themes of identity and culture. This latest endeavor is by far his most ambitious project.

Creating such a large-scale drawing required meticulous planning and execution. David selected the stadium in Lagos not only for its size but also for its symbolic significance. Lagos is a melting pot of cultures and a microcosm of Nigeria’s diversity. By choosing this location, David aimed to make a statement about the importance of unity in a diverse society.

The drawing itself is a feat of artistic and technical prowess. The two hands holding Nigeria’s map are detailed and expressive, symbolizing the strength and support that come from unity. The map in their hands represents the nation being held together by its people, regardless of their differences.

David’s message is timely and relevant, given Nigeria’s ongoing challenges with ethnic and religious conflicts. His artwork seeks to remind Nigerians that their strength lies in their diversity. By celebrating the different cultures, languages, and traditions that make up the nation, he hopes to inspire a sense of collective identity and purpose.

The artist’s background as a medical doctor adds another layer to his story. David has always seen art and medicine as complementary fields. Both require a deep understanding of the human condition and a commitment to making a positive impact. His dual career has allowed him to approach his art with a unique perspective, blending scientific precision with creative expression.

The announcement of David’s attempt at the world record has generated significant interest and excitement. People from different parts of Nigeria and beyond have expressed their support and admiration for his efforts. Social media platforms have been abuzz with discussions about the artwork and its potential to set a new record.

If the Guinness World Record body confirms David’s achievement, it will be a moment of pride not just for the artist but for Nigeria as a whole. It would place the country in the global spotlight for a positive reason, highlighting the talents and creativity of its people.
