Cape Town, South Africa – A wave of violence ripped through Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township early Wednesday morning, leaving eight people dead in a series of shootings. South African authorities are scrambling to determine the motive behind the attacks.
The violence unfolded across three separate incidents. The most deadly attack occurred on Ncumu Street, where officers discovered the bodies of four men and one woman with gunshot wounds at around 6:00 AM.
“The initial investigation suggests that the five deaths in Ncumu Street might be connected to two incidents that happened earlier this morning,” a statement from the South African Police Service (SAPS) revealed.
Those earlier incidents occurred just hours before the discovery on Ncumu Street. Police reported that an adult male and his girlfriend were shot and killed on Feza Street around 2:50 AM. Shortly thereafter, a 35-year-old man was also shot and killed nearby.
Investigators haven’t yet identified a motive for the killings, but they believe the same perpetrators may be responsible for all three attacks.

The nation also has a significant number of licensed firearms in circulation, with an estimated 4.5 million registered guns.
