J&J Children’s Cough Syrup has been Recalled in East Africa Over Safety Concerns

Tanzania, Rwanda Join Existing Recalls After High Toxicity Levels Found

by Victor Adetimilehin

Several East African nations are expanding a recall of Johnson & Johnson’s children’s cough syrup as a precautionary measure. The move comes after Nigerian health regulators detected high levels of diethylene glycol, a potentially toxic substance, in a specific batch of the medication.

Expanding the Recall Across Borders

Tanzania and Rwanda became the latest countries to join the recall on April 15th, following similar actions taken earlier by Kenya and South Africa. The recalled batch of Benylin Paediatric syrup, used to treat coughs and allergies in children, was manufactured by Johnson & Johnson in South Africa in May 2021. Ownership of the brand has since been transferred to Kenvue, a pharmaceutical company.

Laboratory tests conducted by Nigeria’s health agency revealed concerning levels of diethylene glycol in the syrup.  Moreover, this chemical has been linked to several tragic incidents of child deaths from contaminated oral medications in recent years.

Health regulators across East Africa are acting swiftly to ensure public safety. The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) began its recall on April 12th. A spokesperson emphasized that this is a precautionary measure and no adverse reactions have been reported in Tanzania. Similarly, Rwanda’s Food and Drugs Authority issued a statement highlighting the absence of reported issues in their country but stressed the importance of a precautionary recall.

Investigations and Next Steps

Kenya’s drug regulatory body expects to have its test results on the syrup by April 17th. Kenvue, the current owner of the Benylin Paediatric brand, stated it’s conducting its investigation and collaborating with health authorities to determine the best course of action.

While the risk appears limited to a specific batch, authorities are urging parents and caregivers in affected countries to check their medicine cabinets. If they find the Benylin Paediatric syrup manufactured in South Africa in May 2021, they should return it to the pharmacy where it was purchased.

Focus on Safety and Consumer Confidence

The swift response by health regulators in East Africa demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding public health. These actions, while concerning, also highlight the importance of robust safety measures in the pharmaceutical industry. Consumers can expect further updates as investigations and recalls progress.
