Gambia Launches Ambitious Campaign to End Female Genital Cutting

Ending Female Genital Cutting in The Gambia: A Step Towards Empowerment and Equality

by Motoni Olodun

The Gambia embarks on a groundbreaking initiative to eradicate female genital cutting, a deeply entrenched cultural practice affecting millions of women and girls globally. The campaign, led by the government with support from international organizations, marks a pivotal moment in the fight against gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices.
Female genital cutting, also known as female genital mutilation (FGM), remains prevalent in many parts of the world, despite concerted efforts to eliminate it. In The Gambia, the practice is widespread, with approximately 76% of women and girls subjected to FGM, according to UNICEF data.
The new campaign aims to raise awareness about the physical and psychological consequences of FGM, empower communities to abandon the practice, and provide support to survivors. It leverages a multi-sectoral approach, involving government agencies, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and grassroots activists.
Key stakeholders emphasize the importance of community engagement and grassroots mobilization in driving sustainable change. By fostering dialogue and collaboration at the local level, the campaign seeks to challenge entrenched norms and promote gender equality and women’s rights.
Efforts to end FGM in The Gambia have gained momentum in recent years, with legislative reforms and increased advocacy efforts contributing to greater awareness and mobilization. However, significant challenges remain, including deep-rooted cultural beliefs, socio-economic disparities, and limited access to healthcare and education.
The Gambia’s commitment to ending FGM aligns with global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5 on gender equality and Goal 3 on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. By prioritizing the elimination of FGM, the country demonstrates its dedication to advancing human rights and promoting the well-being of women and girls.
As the campaign gains traction, stakeholders express cautious optimism about the prospects of ending FGM in The Gambia and beyond. While the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, the collective resolve and concerted action offer hope for a future free from the harmful practice of female genital cutting.
