Egypt’s Citadel of Cairo Opens New Wing to Boost Tourism

Historic fortress welcomes visitors to explore its renovated towers and halls

Egypt is home to many ancient wonders, but one of its most impressive landmarks is the Citadel of Cairo, a medieval fortress that towers over the city. Built by the Muslim military commander Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi in the 12th century, the citadel served as the seat of power for over 700 years, witnessing many historical events and transformations.

Now, the citadel is opening a new wing to the public, featuring two semi-circular towers and a hall that were previously used as a private events space and a military barracks. The new section, which was renovated with the help of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, offers stunning views of the city and showcases the architectural and artistic heritage of the citadel.

The new wing is part of a broader plan to boost tourism in Egypt, which has been recovering from years of political instability and security concerns. According to the tourism minister, Ahmed Eissa, the citadel visit will be extended from one hour to at least three, and Cairo will be relaunched as a new cultural product called “Cairo City Break”.

The citadel is not the only attraction that is getting a makeover in Egypt. The country is also working on the Grand Egyptian Museum, which will house the largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world, including the treasures of King Tutankhamun. The museum is expected to open in 2024, coinciding with the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Egypt hopes that these initiatives will attract more visitors and increase its tourism revenues, which stood at $16.4 billion in 2019. According to a report by the Arabian Travel Market, Egypt’s tourism industry is on its way to a remarkable recovery, with spending from foreign visitors projected to reach $29.7 billion by 2024.

Egypt is not only a destination for history buffs, but also for adventure seekers, beach lovers, and culture enthusiasts. The country offers a variety of experiences, from sailing on the Nile to diving in the Red Sea, from exploring the pyramids to wandering through the bazaars. Egypt is a land of contrasts, where ancient and modern coexist, and where every visitor can find something to marvel at.

Egypt is also a land of resilience, where people have overcome many challenges and hardships, and where hope is always alive. As the citadel opens its doors to the world, it invites everyone to discover its secrets and stories and to share in its spirit of renewal.
