Zimbabwe is gearing up to host a pivotal gathering of Africa’s finance ministers at the 56th Session of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Conference. The event, scheduled for next month in the scenic locale of Victoria Falls, will bring together the continent’s financial leaders to discuss and propose solutions for sustainable growth amidst various development challenges.

In a recent update, Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister, Mthuli Ncube, announced that preparations for the high-level conference are well underway. The conference, also known as Com24, will delve into the theme, “Financing the Transition to Inclusive Green Economies in Africa: Imperatives, Opportunities, and Policy Options.” This theme highlights the continent’s pressing need for adequate resources to shift towards green economies, addressing the impacts of climate change, pandemics, escalating debt, and conflicts, among other issues.

According to a report by New Zimbabwe, Ncube emphasized the significance of the conference in facilitating meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas among experts, African ministers responsible for finance, planning, economic development, and central bank governors. These discussions will focus on the critical development agenda for Africa.

A notable feature of the event will be a presentation by a renowned global thought leader on “Artificial Intelligence and Economic Development in Africa,” indicating the conference’s commitment to exploring cutting-edge topics relevant to the continent’s growth.

The conference format includes initial technical discussions by a Committee of Experts focusing on the main theme and statutory issues. This will be followed by the main conference, featuring ministers of finance, planning, and economic development, over the final two days.

In preparation for this significant event, the Zimbabwean government has engaged in extensive consultations and coordination efforts, involving Inter-Ministerial Technical Sub-Committees from various government ministries, departments, and agencies in collaboration with the UNECA Secretariat.

Highlighting the broader implications of hosting this event, Ncube added that it aligns with Zimbabwe’s commitment to the United Nations and serves as an excellent opportunity to showcase the country on a global stage. This is particularly relevant as Zimbabwe continues its engagement and re-engagement drive with the international community.
