Ghana Faces AFCON Exit After Dramatic Late Collapse Against Mozambique

Black Stars Squander Two-Goal Lead in Stoppage Time, Hinge on Slim Hope for Tournament Survival

by Adenike Adeodun

Ghana’s hopes of progressing in AFCON 2023 suffered a severe blow as they squandered a two-goal advantage in stoppage time against Mozambique on Monday, bringing them perilously close to a tournament exit. This dramatic turn of events has left the Black Stars clinging to a thread of hope, dependent on outcomes from other third-placed teams to confirm their fate.

The match, marked by high tension and pivotal moments, saw Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace open the scoring for Ghana just 15 minutes in. Awarded a penalty after Mozambique’s Infren Nanani fouled Joseph Paintsil, Ayew demonstrated remarkable composure in converting the spot-kick, giving Ghana an early lead. Despite this, the first half remained a tightly contested affair.

Mozambique, determined to equalize, intensified their efforts in the second half. Their zeal almost paid off when Bruno Langa took a promising shot, only to be denied by Ghana’s goalkeeper, Richard Ofori. However, disaster struck Mozambique in the 67th minute when Mohammed Kudus’ goal-bound shot resulted in a second penalty for Ghana after hitting Reinildo Mandava’s hand. Ayew, once again, stepped up and successfully doubled Ghana’s lead.

The match’s climax came in the final minutes. Andre Ayew, Jordan’s older brother, inadvertently handled the ball in the penalty area, granting Mozambique a lifeline. Geny Catamo seized the opportunity, scoring from the penalty spot in the 91st minute. Three minutes later, Reinildo redeemed his earlier error by heading in Shaquille Momad Nangy’s corner, equalizing the score and precipitating Ghana’s potential exit.

According to a report by Goal.com, Ghana’s goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, faced criticism for conceding the late corner that led to Mozambique’s equalizer. Attempting to parry Mandava’s shot, Ofori fumbled, leading to the crucial corner. While Ghana’s defence also faltered in guarding the set piece, it was Ofori’s error that set the stage for the equalizing goal.

As it stands, despite their spirited display, Mozambique concludes their AFCON journey at the bottom of their group. Ghana, finishing third, now faces a tense wait to see if a miracle in other group matches might extend their tournament life.
