In a move that signals a new chapter for Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), the company has proudly announced the appointment of Jim Swartz as its new Chairman and Managing Director. This significant change is set to take effect from April 1, 2024, marking a strategic shift in the leadership of the Chevron Nigeria/Mid-Africa Business Unit.
Esimaje Brikinn, the esteemed General Manager of Policy, Government and Public Affairs at Chevron Nigeria, shared this groundbreaking news in a recent press statement. Swartz, who has previously made his mark as the Vice President of Capital Projects in Houston, Texas, brings a wealth of upstream business experience to the table. Renowned for his exceptional ability in forming successful alliances with key stakeholders, Swartz is poised to drive Chevron Nigeria into a new era of growth and innovation.
Holding a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a Master of Science from the University of Oklahoma, Swartz’s academic background lays a solid foundation for his new role. Beginning his journey with Chevron in Louisiana in 1990 as a geologist, he has demonstrated his prowess through a series of progressively responsible roles, both in Angola and the United States.
According to The Nigerian Inquirer, Swartz steps into the shoes of Richard (Rick) Kennedy, who leaves behind a legacy of nearly 40 years of dedicated service to the company. Kennedy, noted for his thoughtful and cooperative leadership style, has played a pivotal role in enhancing business outcomes for Chevron’s Nigeria/Mid-Africa Business Unit. His tenure saw significant advancements, especially as the chairman of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he championed industry engagements on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and other vital industry initiatives.
Kennedy’s commitment to social and economic development in the region, particularly as the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), has been commendable. His efforts in promoting regional socioeconomic development and peacemaking have left an indelible mark on the industry.
As Swartz prepares to take on his new role, there is a palpable sense of anticipation and optimism within Chevron Nigeria. His appointment is seen as a testament to the company’s ongoing commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainable growth in the ever-evolving oil and gas industry.
This strategic leadership transition at Chevron Nigeria Limited is not just a change of guard but a reaffirmation of the company’s dedication to maintaining its position as a leader in the energy sector. With Jim Swartz at the helm, Chevron is poised to navigate the challenges of the modern energy landscape while continuing to contribute significantly to the Nigerian economy and the global energy market.
