In a landmark move, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has announced the signing of multibillion-dollar Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with international technical partners. These agreements, which also rejuvenate existing partnerships, are set to establish a coal-based fertilizer plant, Lithium processing, and an Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant, along with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for forestation, smart solar irrigation, tractor repairs, and crop traceability to enhance food security.
The news, delivered by Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, came during his keynote address at a 5-Day training program for the Agency’s Information, New Media, and Protocol staff. This training focuses on New Media and Protocol Strategies for a Modern Government Agency in the 21st century, highlighting the agency’s commitment to keeping pace with the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Since Mr. Halilu’s tenure began four months ago, NASENI has embarked on several initiatives aimed at transforming over 150 scientific and technological prototypes, products, and intellectual properties into market-ready products. This strategic move aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its Eight Priority Areas, underscoring NASENI’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s industrial and technological growth.
Halilu emphasized the importance of investing in human capital, stating, “Investing in human capital development and staff motivation remain the best ways of repositioning the Agency into a power-house of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) at the global scene.” This approach is pivotal in ensuring that NASENI’s staff are well-equipped with the necessary technical, vocational, and management skills required for the agency’s growth and technology advancement.
The 5-Day intensive training programme is designed to bring NASENI’s information and Protocol staff up to speed with current trends and international standards in mastering new media and protocol strategies. This initiative is part of a broader mandate that includes driving Nigeria’s rapid industrialization through Collaboration, Creation, and Commercialization – the new three Cs of NASENI.
Approximately forty-one staff members from the headquarters and Institutes are participating in this training, aimed at enhancing their ability to effectively communicate the agency’s new strategy and partnerships to various publics. The training is expected to equip the participants with skills at par with their contemporaries in the public and private sectors, as well as those in the international sphere.
Prof. Bagudu Dansheu Gwadangaji, Coordinating Director of Engineering Infrastructure, represented by Engr. Dr. Olayode Olasupo, highlighted the importance of adapting to new media and protocol strategies for the continued success and relevance of NASENI.
The Coordinating Director of Science Infrastructure, Prof. Umar Ibrahim Gaya, pointed out the timeliness of the training theme, especially in equipping participants with the skills and tools necessary to combat fake news, a significant challenge in the digital age.
Mr. Segun Ayeoyenikan, the Director of Information, Protocol, and New Media Unit, praised Mr. Khalil Halilu for prioritizing staff motivation, development, and productivity since assuming the role of EVC/CEO. He underscored the importance of this training in navigating the complexities of the digital age and emphasized the need for effective communication in today’s sophisticated society.
In conclusion, NASENI’s recent initiatives mark a significant step towards Nigeria’s aspiration to become a global powerhouse in science, technology, and innovation. By forging international partnerships and investing in staff development, NASENI is setting the stage for a transformative impact on Nigeria’s technological landscape.
