Leading figures in data protection and privacy are currently meeting in Accra to tackle and create solutions for the growing challenges in the sector across Africa.
The Africa Digital Rights Hub (ADRH) launched this major annual summit yesterday, bringing together ICT industry experts, policymakers, regulators, researchers, lawmakers, and data protection practitioners. This collaborative event aims to address critical issues including the influence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), data transfers in Africa, and how data protection and identity systems relate to the African Continental Free Trade Agreements.
Justice Jennifer A. Dadzie, a Court of Appeal Justice, highlighted the vital role of collaboration and innovation in protecting personal data in Africa’s dynamic digital landscape. She stressed the challenges African nations face, including limited resources, inadequate legislation, and a general lack of awareness in protecting citizens’ data privacy and security.
Justice Dadzie urged African nations to join forces and develop stronger oversight and accountability mechanisms in data protection. “Building bridges for oversight and accountability is a joint effort,” he said, calling for cooperation among governments, regulatory bodies, civil societies, and the private sector.
According to a report by Daily Graphic, Kwesi Quartey, a member of the ADRH governing council, emphasized the organisation’s commitment to developing ‘Afro-centric’ solutions through discussion and research. He pointed out the dangers of unauthorized and illegal personal data processing, highlighting the crucial role of data protection in defending human rights and freedoms in the digital era.
This summit provides a vital platform for participants to exchange ideas, network, and formulate solutions that will propel the continent forward in the fields of privacy and data protection.
Marking a key moment in Africa’s digital journey, this gathering in Accra underscores the importance of global collaboration in addressing the evolving digital challenges faced by the continent.
