On Nov. 30, 2023, Balarade Lawal, Minister of Environment, commended Lafarge Africa Plc for its exemplary commitment to environmental sustainability. This recognition came during a courtesy visit by Lafarge’s management team, led by Group Managing Director/CEO Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, in Abuja.
In his address, Lawal praised Lafarge Africa for its adherence to environmental regulations and its significant role in the nation’s economic development. He emphasized the challenges of the cement industry in environmental management, underscoring the importance of compliance with environmental regulations, including the National Environmental (Non-metallic minerals manufacturing industries sector) Regulations and the National Action Plan for mercury reduction.
The Minister encouraged Lafarge to adopt modern, cleaner, and energy-efficient technologies. He also urged the company to enhance its Corporate Social Responsibility, suggesting initiatives like constructing toilet facilities in host communities.
Lawal expressed a keen interest in circular economy practices, highlighting Lafarge’s efforts in waste management, cleaning, sorting, and recycling as aligning with the Ministry’s goals for a more hygienic environment.
Alade-Akinyemi, congratulating the Minister on his recent appointment, expressed confidence in Lawal’s leadership and reaffirmed Lafarge Africa’s commitment to responsible operations and environmental sustainability. He appreciated the Ministry’s support in approving key projects that enhance the company’s sustainability initiatives, such as Alternative Fuels for kiln firing and the Storage of ash permit for the Ashaka Captive Power Plant project.
The GMD/CEO emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Ministry in climate change and sustainability initiatives. He also acknowledged the Ministry’s efficiency in permit issuance and expressed a desire for further collaboration in promoting environmental responsibility within the industry.
Alade-Akinyemi sought continued support from the Ministry for new projects, modifications, and annual permits, highlighting Lafarge Africa’s dedication to a ‘zero waste’ treatment solution and ending open-air burning practices. He proposed implementing an online process for project approvals and report submissions to enhance efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of traditional paperwork.
The meeting concluded with optimism about a strengthened partnership between Lafarge Africa Plc and the Federal Ministry of Environment. This collaboration aims to set new benchmarks in environmental stewardship, contributing to a sustainable and eco-friendly future.
