At the 43rd Annual PMAWCA Conference in Lagos, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu championed African collaboration in harnessing the blue economy. He foresees this as a key to the continent’s wealth. The President, represented by Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, pinpointed the sector’s pivotal role in sustainable growth. “The maritime industry drives our nations’ progress,” Tinubu stated firmly.
He urged leaders to look beyond borders as waters link nations and demand joint efforts. According to a report by This Day Live, Tinubu stressed the need for technology, notably automation, to keep African ports globally competitive.
“Our commitment to technology in public management is strong,” Tinubu assured. He promised full support for the Nigerian Ports Authority in advancing port systems.
Automation stands out as a must for the region’s ports to compete globally, Tinubu argued. Efficient cargo handling is a must for African ports’ competitiveness, he added.
Supporting Tinubu’s call, Mohammed Bello Koko, head of the Nigerian Ports Authority, advocated for unity in maritime matters. He highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a significant growth opportunity. “We must join forces to remove trade barriers,” Koko advised.
He commended the PMAWCA for promoting port cooperation and committed to further partnerships. The conference sets up a dialogue on leveraging maritime resources for growth, Koko noted. He urged delegates to share insights, targeting enhanced trade and regional economic development.
