Nigeria’s Humanitarian Affairs Minister, Dr. Betta Edu, recently led a pivotal meeting in The Hague, focusing on combating illegal migration and fostering youth development.
Joined by representatives from Europe, Asia, America, Africa, and the Middle East, the dialogue centered around the Rabat Process on Migration, Youth, and Development. This significant assembly, co-hosted by Nigeria and the Netherlands, sought to address the complex challenges youths face, including human trafficking, exploitation, and dire conditions during migration.
Addressing a global online audience, Dr. Edu emphasized the humanitarian crises stemming from unlawful migration. She detailed the perils, from organ harvesting and modern slavery to life-threatening journeys across seas and deserts.
Highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Dr. Edu outlined strategies for combating the “Japa” phenomenon. These measures span poverty reduction, employment generation, education, healthcare, environmental protection, youth leadership inclusion, and more.
According to a report by This Day Live, the dialogue specifically targeted global challenges affecting youth, who comprise 16% of the global population. Commitments were solidified between Nigeria, the Netherlands, and 48 other nations to curb illegal migration and empower youth, ensuring a conducive environment for their prosperity.
A subsequent bilateral session delved into the Presidential Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund. Dr. Edu advocated support from international partners and affluent individuals.
Further discussions encompassed President Tinubu’s agenda on humanitarian aid, poverty mitigation, and hunger eradication initiatives.
Continuing her engagement, Dr. Edu visited the Nigeria House, conferring with Ambassador Dr. Eniola Ajayi. She commended the ambassador’s dedication as a Renewed Hope Agenda envoy, lauding her efforts in elevating Nigeria’s stature within the Netherlands.
Ambassador Ajayi shared her publication, “Nigeria at a Glance,” with Dr. Edu, featuring global Nigerian diplomatic offices, affirming the country’s extensive international presence.
