Côte d’Ivoire, AFRICOM Hold Defense Conference for 13 Nations

by Adenike Adeodun

In a bid to tackle pressing logistical challenges faced by West African military forces, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) partnered with Côte d’Ivoire’s Armed Forces. This partnership sparked the West Africa Logistics Conference, a key event in Abidjan from September 19-20.

This pivotal gathering drew 50 top military logistics leaders. Representatives came from West African countries, the African Union, ECOWAS, and the United States. They united under the theme: “Addressing Regional Logistic Challenges: Collaboration and Solutions.”

According to a report by Premium Times, the conference aimed to build alliances and tailor solutions to common challenges. It provided a vibrant platform for dialogue.

Rear Admiral George Bresnihan, AFRICOM’s Logistics Director, highlighted the need for such joint efforts. “We’re crafting strong, meaningful logistic solutions together,” Bresnihan noted, thanking the Ivorian military for its solid support.

Insights from key figures marked the two-day conference. Voices included the US Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Jessica Ba, and Côte d’Ivoire’s defense sector officials.

Focused discussions fueled the event. Topics ranged from enhancing institutional capacities and using logistical data to managing resources efficiently. Importantly, strategies extended beyond routine matters, encompassing response plans for major crises like natural disasters or pandemics.

The conference’s impact was evident in its diverse turnout. Nations, including Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, showed keen interest in forming a unified logistics strategy.

This conference built on earlier efforts, notably a July visit by top US Marine Corps figures to Côte d’Ivoire. Their focus? To deepen ties and cooperation. AFRICOM’s leader, General Michael Langley, underscores engaging with African countries, a view shared by AFRICOM Public Affairs.

As the conference concluded, the drive for collaboration was clear. The goal is that these dialogues will spur concrete action, bolstering the collective resilience of West Africa and its allies.
