Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, took a firm stance against the Federal Government’s continuous reliance on petrol imports, emphasizing the financial strain it places on the nation’s economy. He passionately advocated for the rejuvenation of Nigeria’s domestic refineries.
The governor’s comments came during a meeting at the Government House in Asaba with the National Executive Committee of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG). The union’s delegation, headed by National President Williams Akporeha, was there to discuss critical matters concerning the nation’s oil and gas sector.
Governor Oborevwori argued that for a nation endowed with rich oil resources and owning four refineries, it’s baffling that Nigeria still imports fuel for domestic use. “It’s perplexing that our refineries have remained dormant for years. Instead of strategizing on harnessing them, we’ve become reliant on importing petroleum products,” he said.
He didn’t miss the chance to acknowledge NUPENG’s pivotal role in Nigeria. Expressing gratitude to Akporeha and his team for their unwavering support during the elections, he said, “NUPENG has tirelessly championed a more efficient and public-centered oil and gas sector over the years. Your commitment to Nigeria’s progress doesn’t go unnoticed.”
The governor also lauded NUPENG’s initiative to establish a skill acquisition center aiming to equip Delta State’s youth with crucial skills relevant to the oil and gas industry. Eager to support this endeavor, he promised the state’s collaboration. “We are entirely on board with the skill acquisition initiative. We will coordinate with the Ministry of Lands to ensure you secure a plot for this venture. The state will provide the land; your task is to erect the center.”
Reiterating his commitment to youth empowerment, Governor Oborevwori highlighted his track record, “Being a youth-centric leader, my administration includes more than ten individuals under 40. The proposed skill acquisition center aligns perfectly with our vision.”
