Banky W Calls Lagos Rep Election Rerun ‘a Miracle’

by Adenike Adeodun

Bankole Wellington, better known as Banky W and a House of Representatives candidate, eagerly anticipates the upcoming poll in Lagos State’s Eti-Osa Federal Constituency.

In the February 2023 elections, Mr. Thaddeus Atta of the Labour Party won with 24,075 votes. Banky W from the Peoples Democratic Party and Ibrahim Obanikoro from the All Progressives Congress trailed with 18,668 and 16,901 votes, respectively. However, both Wellington and Obanikoro challenged the results, claiming the election wasn’t valid.

Earlier this week, the Election Petitions Tribunal determined that the February elections were inconclusive, according to a report by Daily Post. They directed INEC to organize a supplementary election in 33 polling units where voting didn’t initially take place. This rerun should occur within the next 90 days.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wellington remarked, “Getting another chance to conclude this election feels like a miracle.”

He further emphasized the tribunal’s decision, saying, “This journey underscores the importance of persistence, steadfast faith, and a community of citizens committed to bolstering our democracy.”

He added, “Many people were disappointed they couldn’t vote last time. We must ensure everyone gets their chance to participate.”

Now 42, Banky W expressed his frustration over the missed voting opportunities for nearly 30,000 voters across over 30 polling units. He recalled multiple issues, from overt voter suppression and random acts of violence to missing INEC officials at polling stations.

Wrapping up, the musician-turned-politician expressed his gratitude, noting, “I appreciate the court’s view – we must count every vote and hear every voice, regardless of their allegiance.”

The upcoming rerun has piqued interest, with constituents keenly awaiting another chance to select their Eti-Osa Federal Constituency representative.
